The Understanding Drîm Dimension

A pictogram of the human brain.

Understanding how people and things work.

The Understanding Drîm Dimension

The Understanding Drîm Dimension is the most fundamental and critical of the dimensions, because it deals with our understanding of reality - both in general and in each of the other drîm dimensions.

Dramatic improvement in Understanding enables us to troubleshoot all dimensions - including itself.

Understanding is consequently the hardest to grasp at the start, but the most fruitful to invest time and effort in, once you have grasped it.

Definition

Aligning our perception of how things work with reality.

Definition

The Understanding Drîm Dimension deals with the alignment of perception with reality and is consequently critical to dramatic improvement.

If there's a high level of alignment between perception and reality, then the chances of drîm success is high. If the level of alignment is low, the chances of success become vanishingly small.

The problem is that we are notoriously poor at aligning our perception with reality and even weaker at detecting misalignment.

The Challenge

The Understanding Drîm Dimension (human) Pictogram trying to jump over a hurdle

We're trapped in and by our own understanding.

The Challenge

There's no reliable reference understanding to assess or improve our beliefs against - so it's easy to become trapped in our own thinking and echo-chamber.

The dynamically complex nature of reality makes dramatic improvement demanding enough - Cognitive Biases, Logical Fallacies and Unconscious Incognizance compound the problem and make it hard for us to detect where we're mistaken and work out how to correct our thinking.

The Solution Requirement

The Solution Pictogram (idea bulb) and a question mark, alongside the Understanding (human brain) Pictogram

We need ways of recognising, identifying and correcting flawed understanding.

The Solution Requirement

We need reliable ways to:

  1. Bring us to recognise when our understanding is flawed: it's easy to blame others or situation intractability.
  2. Work out where the flaw in our understanding is - we're slow to give up hard-won beliefs and understanding.
  3. Come up with a better understanding - we often don't even know where to start or how to go about it.

The General Solution

The Understanding (Human Brain) Pictogram in the Solution (yellow lightbulb) Pictogram

Test our understanding against past, virtual and future reality and for common flaws and weaknesses.

The General Solution

  1. Set up triggers and filters for identifying that we have an understanding problem.
  2. Establish diagnostics for working out where the flaw is in our understanding.
  3. Design a simple method for generating, integrating and testing alternatives to the existing understanding.

Fortunately, we don't have to restrict ourselves to live tests, we can run them virtually, on historical situations and mental models of future scenarios.

Misunderstanding Detection

Without triggers that bring us to question our beliefs, we remain trapped in ignorance and misconception, dramatic improvement forever beyound our reach.

  1. When we feel unconfident, uncertain, apprehensive or worried about some potential outcome.
  2. When things go wrong
  3. When we notice repeating patterns of frustration, disaapointment or failure.
  4. Periodic, scheduled impact reviews.
  5. When designing and planning critical initiatives.

How to Identify Understanding Flaws

Magnifying glass focuing on a broken link in a chain

It's one thing to know that something isn't working - another to find and diagnose the flaw.

How to Identify Understanding Flaws

Having a full list of potential success failure modes makes diagnosis quicker, faster, easier and more reliable. The most common failure modes are:

  1. Wrong | Incomplete | Contaminated Data.
  2. Misinterpreted Data | Flawed Assumptions| Flawed Logic or Reasoning.
  3. Wrong Goal | Wrong Problem | Wrong Solution | Flawed Application | Flawed Implementation
  4. One or More Flawed Parts | One or more Flawed Aspects | One or more Flawed Combinations.

BRAT Classification

Belief at the top, Reason arrow beneath it, Assess left of Reason, Test left of Belief, Classification right of Belief and Reason

A simple technique to Assess, Test and Classify Beliefs.

BRAT can also be used to correct and enhance beliefs.

BRAT Classification

  1. Articulate the Belief.
  2. Provide the Reason for the Belief.
  3. Assess the Reason against Cognitive Biases and Logical Fallacies.
  4. Test the Belief against actual and virtual Future, Past and Present Reality.
  5. Classify the Belief as Fact, Likely, Uncertain, Unlikely or Fiction.

BRAT helps us replace fallacious beliefs so that we believe as any truths and as few falsehoods as possible.

How to Enhance Understanding

Small and large Understanding icons (human brains) with an upslanted arrow between them

Identify and replace or enhance the least true beliefs, by generating and integrating alternatives.

How to Enhance Understanding

  1. Generate and integrate alternatives to a starting hypothesis/belief.
  2. Find domain, dimension & arena opportunities.
  3. Integrate by looking for repeating patterns and compatibilities and resolving apparent conflicts.
  4. Alternate between first principles and reverse-engineering thinking, to bridge the gap between current and desired reality.
  5. Deliberately identify and remove or enhance the least true beliefs (using - eg BRAT).

How to Enrich and Achieve Meaning

The Meaning-Drîm Dimension Pictogram

Meaning is a what motivates us - our motivations and beliefs and how they inhibit and drive individual and collective performance and fulfilment.

How to Enrich and Achieve Meaning

Meaning and purpose - immediate and ultimate  - drives all human activity and provides huge untapped opportunity for dramatic improvement.

The challenge with keying into meaning is that it is elusive and not as well-defined, logically grounded, accessible or easy to articulate as we may like to think.

The secret is to recognise that it's fundamentally about our perceived significance within the world we choose to live in - and our value system (what we think is important) and the mental model we have of how things work.

The Motivation Model

We know that motivation is crucial to behaviour, but struggle to become - and stay - motivated and struggle to motivate others and keep them motivated.

The Motivation Model

We know that motivation is crucial to behaviour, but struggle to become - and stay - motivated and struggle to motivate others and keep them motivated.

The key to motivation is to realise that it's the link between our perception of meaning and our behaviour - and that different things are meaningful in different situational contexts (Think: Maslow).

The secret to sustainable motivation is to determine and connect with what is most meaningful - to ourselves and others - within the context.  And then keep reminding ourselves of the connection.

The Worldview | Beliefs Model

Prodsol Worldview-Beliefs Model Pictogram

Our world is the product of our beliefs about meaning.

The Worldview | Beliefs Model

Our worldview is the product of our beliefs, which, in turn are created by contemplation on experiences and influences in our lives.

Worldview is belief-based, not reality-based.  Our beliefs are our society- and environment-assisted interpretation of past, current and future reality.

The point here is that our worldview is on fairly shaky ground, because beliefs are valuable and reliable only as temporary proxies - avatars - for reality.

We need to keep checking them against reality.

Meaning:Worldview Alignment

Meaning Worldview Alignment Pictogram

Our worldview is the set of beliefs we hold about what is meaningful.  Our ability to secure dramatic and sustainable improvement is dependent on the accuracy of our worldview so it's crucial that we work out what our worldview is : how closely our beliefs about reality coincide with that reality - and what we do to improve that alignment.

Meaning:Worldview Alignment

Meaning is elusive, because it's intangible and varies - between people, over time and situationally.  There're many dimensions to meaning, so it's often quite difficult to articulate accurately and effectively.

The matter is further clouded by the worldview problem.  Worldview is our perception of meaning - our beliefs about what will satisfy and fulfil us - distorted by Cognitive Biases and Logical Fallacies.

The trick is to deliberately test our worldview:
Past: Does it adequately explain past reality?
Future: Does it adequately predict future reality?

The Worldview Model

Prodsol Worldview Model Pictogram

Our worldview is the combination of our values and the model we use for advancing them - adding value.

The Worldview Model

It's worth working what our worldview is - and what the worldviews of others are, to (a) be able to key into and key things to our own worldview and (b) to be able to key into and the key things to their worldview.

It's worth working out what your ideal and actual worldviews are.  Your ideal worldview is the relative importance you put on each value.  Your actual worldview is reflected in the attention, time and effort you've invested in each one over the last 30 days.

You might be surprised at the difference between the two!  So don't be surprised if others are the same!

How to Key Into Meaning

Prodsol Key Into Meaning Pictogram

Connecting the dots between meaning and the desired behaviours, produces motivation: the rocket fuel for dramatic improvement.

How to Key Into Meaning

Once we've determined what our worldview is and are actively improving its alignment with reality, we can key activities - both ours and others - to it.

It will seem as if the activities - especially the more mundane ones - are totally unrelated, at first.  But it only takes a little effort and practise before things start connecting up in all of our brains.

At that point, things start becoming more fulfilling and effortless and a virtual cycle is quickly established.  The cycle can be maintained if we remain vigilant - re-establishing the connection every time it gets lost.

How to Escape Dogmatism

Prodsol Flow-State Enablement Pictogram

We are all trapped in dogmatism - a form of fundamentalism that's essential to our ability to reason and communicate, but a constraint on progress.

How to Escape Dogmatism

The key to escaping dogmatism is to deliberately test our worldview against reality - and enhance it until it more accurately explains & predicts reality accurately.

Past: Does it adequately explain past reality?
Future: Does it adequately predict future reality?

The past provides a huge opportunity for conducting this testing, because we don't have to wait for things to unfold before we can test the hypothesis.  We can quickly see whether people behave and events turn as our model predicts - & correct the model if they don't.
