The [[Drim]] Manifesto

The Dramatic Improvement Manifesto asserts that drîm is eminently feasible in every single challenging situation - and provides a high-level rationale for that assertion - as well as explaining why it may be counter-intuitive, at first.

The Manifesto is the foundation of the dramatic improvement framework, discipline and practice.

You'll find yourself returing to the Manifesto frequently, to remind yourself of the fundamental idea - especially when things are most challenging.

Dramatic improvement is eminently feasible in EVERY single situation - without exception.

It doesn't matter how challenging the situation is - or how much time we have - we can always secure dramatically better outcomes and experiences than we are currently securing. Drîm is not only always possible, but always feasible in challenging situations.

It's perfectly - unavoidably - natural to be sceptical of this claim (especially at first) but it is demonstrably, unequivocally true.

There are no exceptions: every single situation can be improved dramatically - no matter how intractable it may seem.

The key is LEVERAGE: the more challenging the situation, the greater the leverage opportunity.

The key to dramatic improvement is leverage.

In fact, the only way improvement can be dramatic is as a result of leverage - there is no other way.

Truly challenging situations are challenging because they're dynamically complex - i.e. there are strong and complex interactions between the situation elements.

So the more challenging the situation (the greater the dynamic complexity) the greater the leverage - and, consequently, the more dramatic the potential for improvement.

The problem is, WE CAN'T SEE the leverage points – not that they aren't there.

There is always another level of leverage – hidden, in plain hindsight, in the reality beyond the one we can currently see.

The problem is that we can't see those leverage points, until we see them, because they are beyond our current capability to see - not because they aren't there.

We can't see the next-level leverage points, because they're counter-intuitive to the previous level of insight.  It's only when we see them that they begin to make sense and become more obvious.

There's a small set of universal lever patterns that all levers follow.

These lever patterns are hidden within plain sight within each situation and repeat within and across domains, dimensions and arenas.

They may be invisible to us, until we see them, but once we've seen them, they become a lot more recognisable.

Use Universal Leverage Patterns as cognitive scaffolding to find the next level of leverage opportunities.

If we know the common patterns that [[drim]] levers follow, we can use these universal patterns as templates and exemplars – cognitive scaffolding – for finding the next-level leverage points, which until then are invisible to us.

All it takes is a deliberate - counter-intuitive at first - scan for each of the patterns, in the face of the firm belief we have that, because we can't see the [[drim]] levers automatically, they must not be there.

Because the set of universal leverage patterns is so small, it doesn't take long to master them.

ANYONE that learns the universal drîm patterns can improve ANY SITUATION dramatically.

The implications of the Drîm Manifesto are immense for us, individually and collectively - both immediately and into the future.

Armed with the Manifesto, a set of universal [[drim]] patterns and some practice, anyone can impact any situation or thing dramatically - the more complex and challenging, the more dramatic the impact.

The Dramatic Improvement Method

It's nearly always better to improve in stages, repeatedly, over time - especially when a significant paradigm shift is required.

In addition to improving buy-in, staging also wastes less time, effort and money, by getting early feedback from the people and system. It's nigh impossible to get things right first-time!

The Drîm Method is a never-ending cycle. The previous solution is the either the next solution requirement or the cause of the current challenge and state.

Develop and integrate a set of solutions for each of the most relevant Drîm Dimensions, using the Ingenuity and Understanding Dimension Techniques in combination with each of them.

  1. Choose an Arena (Marketing, Sales, Production, etc) from the Solutions in the Main Menu.
  2. Choose a specific solution - or set of them - from the collection within that Arena.
  3. Identify which of the solution elements seem to apply to your situation directly - and which don't seem to.

The Drim Framework

Frameworks - especially multi-option ones - resolve the creative-freedom versus analytical-control dilemma, by creating a highly flexible structure that catalyses creativity where it counts - serving as a creative enabler rather than a creative inhibitor.

Once we can see the patterns across the challenges we face - and the patterns across the interventions we can think of (especially the counter-intuitive ones) we can use these patterns as templates and exemplars – cognitive scaffolding – for finding the next-level leverage points.

The Drim Dimensions

The dimensions are really the top level of a deeper taxonomy - and each dimension contains and applies to every toher dimension.

Feel free to adapt this set of Drim Dimensions to suit your world, toolset and way of thinking - this set is merely one way of looking at things.

We advise you to familiarise yourself and take advantage of this first - as there are many thousands of hours of research, thought and work behind their selection.

 
 

 

1. The Flow Dimension

Every challenging situation is a flow-system - and so benefits from the application of dramatic improvement flow-improvement patterns.

  1. Flow-RATE is concerned with improving the volume produced by - the capacity of - the situation or thing.
  2. Flow-TIME is concerned with how long it takes for something to be produced.
  3. Flow-QUALITY is concerned with the value of what's produced by the situation or thing.
  4. Flow-COST is concerned with how much investment (sum of the inputs) is required by the situation or thing.

Ingenuity focuses on individual and collective genius - coming up with smarter, better, cheaper, more sustainable and predictable outcomes.

2. The Ingenuity Dimension

The problem with ingenuity is that it's extremely challenging - biologically - to come up with new outside-the-box solutions and insights.

Deliberately generating and integrating alternative ways of enhancing key dimensions of an evolving solution prototype enables us to escape this physiological constraint.

Applying patterns that resolve the common contradictions between physical properties accelerates things even further.

 
 

3. The Change Dimension

Having a perfect solution is of only academic value without the ability to make the change from the old way of doing things to the new way.

The problem is that people are so familiar with the old way that they can follow it automatically, while the new way is unproven, untested and full of risks and kinks. 

The solution is to collaborate in creating simple frameworks for identifying and mitigating risks and ironing out kinks - and to give people the opportunity to become adept at the new way, before abandoning the old way. 

 
 

4. The Mastery Dimension

Mastery is about becoming - individually and collectively - so good at challenging things that we can do them quickly and automatically.

The problem with learning new things beyond our current capability is that we learn best from (many) mistakes - and opportunities are relatively uncommon, so it takes a long time to achieve it.

The solution is to deliberately identify the most common remaining success and failure modes - and their earliest symptoms - ahead of time - so that we can apply deep practice techniques to grow our capability, at increasing speed, in the face of growing complexity and under increasing pressure, over time,

 
 

5. The Synergy Dimension

Deliberately forging synergy from dysergy (lack of synergy) and antergy (anti-synergy) offers huge oportunities, because we are so inept at it.

The problem with creating synergy is that our brains are wired to see conflicts, differences and incompatibilities far more easily than similarities, combinations and combatibilities.

The solution is familiarity with the most common forms of synergy - and how it can be created from the most common forms of dysergy (lack of synergy) and antergy (anti-senergy).

This enables us to deliberately idebntify and capitalise on synergy opportunities.

The challenge with keying into meaning is that it is elusive and not as well-defined, logically grounded, accessible or easy to articulate as we may like to think.

The secret is to recognise that it's fundamentally about our significance within the world we choose to live in - and how we relate to it.

It might be better for you to:

  1. Scan the specific solutions on this site - in the hope that you'll find the odd nugget that you're looking for.
  2. Consider the possibility that - in spite of thinking that you operate best as a free thinker - you actually do use a framework or solution set: it's just not clearly articulated.

The Drim Method

The Drim Method is a continuous improvement process for applying the Drim Manifesto and Dimensions to a challenging situation or thing.

The Drim Method

It's nearly always better - and possible - to make incremental improvements, repeatedly, over time.

Occasionally a paradigm shift is required, however - although it's nearly always possible to migrate to the the new paradigm in a staged way.

So, the Drim Method is actually a never-ending cycle, in which the previous solution is the either the next solution requirement or the cause of the current challenge and state.

 
 

The Drim Framework IS for you if:

  1. Your aspirations exceed what you're currently confident of securing.
  2. The idea of using a framework to focus your energy and creativity appeals to you.
  3. You can cope with adapting concepts to your reality - not everyone can!
  4. You grasp and embrace the idea of continuous effort and focus over an extended period of time.

The Drim Framework is NOT for you if:

  1. You need only marginally better results - and are confident of getting them
